GridHacker's Review:

One thing to clear up first, because it's the most common misunderstanding about this provider: Veteran Energy does not offer a military discount. The name refers to where a portion of profits goes, not to a rate break for service members. If you're active duty or a veteran shopping specifically for a discount, this isn't it — and to our knowledge no Texas REP currently offers one.

What Veteran Energy does offer is competitive pricing within the Value Based Brands family. As of July 2026, their fixed-rate plans have been running materially under TXU and Gexa on comparable terms, and they trade places with Express Energy depending on the term length you're shopping. For a brand built around a charitable mission, the pricing is genuinely competitive rather than a premium you pay for the sentiment.

The trade-offs are narrow selection and bill-credit structure. Veteran's plan catalog is thin compared to larger providers, and several plans rely on hitting usage thresholds to deliver the advertised rate — the same design that generates most complaints across the VBB family. Their mobile app is weak, with no daily usage data.

Their PUC complaint score held at 3 of 5 in our July 2026 review, the strongest mark of the three Value Based Brands labels. Google sentiment is strong, well above 4 stars across more than a thousand reviews.

If the mission matters to you and your usage is predictable, this is a reasonable place to land.

About Veteran Energy

Founded in 2010, Veteran Energy is a Texas-based energy provider focused on serving customers while supporting American military members. In 2020, Veteran Energy was acquired by Value Based Brands, placing it alongside 4Change Energy and Express Energy under Vistra Corp ownership.

The brand's mission is charitable rather than promotional. Veteran Energy directs support to five affinity partners — Operation Red Wings Foundation, Texas VFW Foundation, Combined Arms, Paws for Heroes, and Fisher House — and customers choose which partner their contribution supports, with unallocated funds going to a general military-support fund.

Veteran Energy serves Oncor, CenterPoint, Texas-New Mexico Power, AEP Texas Central, and AEP Texas North territories. Plans are primarily fixed-rate across three-month to three-year terms, with a 100% green energy upgrade available on any plan.

Our Research

Our mission is to provide accurate and helpful data and content to help you make an informed decision when comparing energy providers.

How we rate providers

Plans and Rates:

We review all available plans from every licensed energy provider. Then we rank the lowest available rate from each provider. Providers then receive a rating based on what percentile their lowest plan ranks.

For example, Provider A has the 3rd lowest-priced plan, while Provider B has the 45th lowest-priced plan out of 46 providers who submitted plans to PUC. Provider A will have a rating of 5, while Provider B will have a rating of 1.

Customer Service:

We scrape online reviews from Google, Yelp, BBB, and Trust Pilot to determine what customers are saying about the provider. The rating reflects the aggregate of all online reviews.

Renewable Options:

The rating system is based on the availability of renewable energy options. A 5-star rating is awarded to entities that offer a fully renewable option, signifying 100% renewable energy usage. A 4-star rating is given to those that provide a mix of energy sources, with more than 50% coming from renewable sources. Entities with renewable energy options exceeding the state average of 31.1% receive a 3-star rating, while those offering less than 31.1% renewable options are rated with 2 stars. Lastly, a 1-star rating is assigned to those with no renewable energy options, indicating a lack of commitment to sustainable energy practices.

PUC Rating:

The Public Utility Commission publishes a rating for each provider based on the number of formal complaints filed against the provider in comparison to how many customers they have.

For example, a provider with 10 formal complaints out of 10,000 customers would have a 1-star rating whereas a provider with 10 complaints and 1,000,000 customers would have a 5-star rating.

GridHacker Rating:

The GridHacker rating uses a weighted average that prioritizes rates and customer service over renewable options and PUC rating. We do this because we feel that for most customers price and service are the two most important factors when they are shopping for an electricity plan.
