GridHacker's Review:

IronHorse Power Services is built around a simple bet: most Texans don't want to compare 200 plans, they want three good ones.

Their site shows a small number of fixed-rate options rather than an exhaustive catalog, and the messaging avoids the gimmick structures — no free nights, no bill-credit thresholds, no promotional teaser rates. For a customer who finds Power to Choose overwhelming, that's a real service. It also means you should still open the Electricity Facts Label and check the rate at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh, because a short list doesn't guarantee the right fit for your usage.

The leadership is experienced. Both founders come out of established Texas retail energy operations rather than starting from scratch, and that shows in a clean regulatory record — a PUC complaint score of 5 of 5 as of our July 2026 review.

The limitation is support hours. IronHorse staffs Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 Central. That's fine for enrollment and routine billing, less good if a move-in or a payment problem lands on a Saturday. Outages always route through your utility regardless of provider.

A solid fit if you're working with a broker or managing properties.

About IronHorse Power Services

IronHorse Power Services is a Texas-based retail electricity provider serving residential, commercial, property management, and broker customers across deregulated ERCOT markets. The company was founded by retail energy veterans — CEO Peter Buell and COO David Garcia, whose prior roles include work with Champion Energy Services, TriEagle Energy, OGE Energy Resources, and PanEnergy Power Services.

IronHorse takes a deliberately narrow approach to plan presentation, surfacing a small number of fixed-rate options rather than a large catalog. The company charges no switching fees and supports fully online enrollment.

A notable part of the business is broker and property-manager service, with custom commercial pricing and multi-property tools. Customer support runs Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST. PUC certificate #10289, verified July 2026.

Our Research

Our mission is to provide accurate and helpful data and content to help you make an informed decision when comparing energy providers.

How we rate providers

Plans and Rates:

We review all available plans from every licensed energy provider. Then we rank the lowest available rate from each provider. Providers then receive a rating based on what percentile their lowest plan ranks.

For example, Provider A has the 3rd lowest-priced plan, while Provider B has the 45th lowest-priced plan out of 46 providers who submitted plans to PUC. Provider A will have a rating of 5, while Provider B will have a rating of 1.

Customer Service:

We scrape online reviews from Google, Yelp, BBB, and Trust Pilot to determine what customers are saying about the provider. The rating reflects the aggregate of all online reviews.

Renewable Options:

The rating system is based on the availability of renewable energy options. A 5-star rating is awarded to entities that offer a fully renewable option, signifying 100% renewable energy usage. A 4-star rating is given to those that provide a mix of energy sources, with more than 50% coming from renewable sources. Entities with renewable energy options exceeding the state average of 31.1% receive a 3-star rating, while those offering less than 31.1% renewable options are rated with 2 stars. Lastly, a 1-star rating is assigned to those with no renewable energy options, indicating a lack of commitment to sustainable energy practices.

PUC Rating:

The Public Utility Commission publishes a rating for each provider based on the number of formal complaints filed against the provider in comparison to how many customers they have.

For example, a provider with 10 formal complaints out of 10,000 customers would have a 1-star rating whereas a provider with 10 complaints and 1,000,000 customers would have a 5-star rating.

GridHacker Rating:

The GridHacker rating uses a weighted average that prioritizes rates and customer service over renewable options and PUC rating. We do this because we feel that for most customers price and service are the two most important factors when they are shopping for an electricity plan.
