Amigo Energy is a familiar name in the energy industry in Texas. They have been in operation for over 20 years. In 2023 they were even named the best electric company in Houston by The Houston Chronicle.

Amigo typically offers competitive rates in Texas, but they seem to follow the same strategy as most other energy providers. They will list low rates with short-term plans, 3 months for example, then once your first contract is up they will hike up your rate at renewal. This is a common practice among suppliers. They use short-term plans and low rates to attract new customers then once the customer forgets about their plan they increase prices.

So, before you enroll with Amigo make sure you set reminders to check your renewal date and watch your rate closely.

WORST COMPANY EVERRRRRR!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO THEM. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS!! I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT LIGHTS FOR MORE THAN 24hrs! This company is a scam, power has went out several times within the last two months. All the times it took soo long to receive power again we had to toss out all our food, it cost us alot of money. Yesterday the power went out around 1:30pm we called several times all they could say is we already reported the problem and they are looking into it. After 24hrs of no power we finally canceled them and within 45mins we got power from a different company. Again terrible service they don't care us customers.

Very bad company. I was unaware that I was getting service from them for two entire months. They did not let me know when they were going to start servicing me, I was expecting to be asked to provide more information about that. When I got the welcome message, I read through it but then I forgot about it since I was not asked or given any more information. I was still paying my previous energy provider until my electricity was cut off one day, so I checked the mail and got a bill from Amigo Energy. I went ahead and paid the bill as it was only a $130. However, I had already paid my other energy provider and I was confused as to why my other energy provider was still charging me if supposedly Amigo had took over. The following month, I get a bill for $380 and I decided to call and try to cancel my account because I could not afford this. They said my account was cancelled and I went ahead and got a different energy provider. They did not mention that I had to pay any termination fee, I just paid the $380 I was billed that month. The following month, I get a different energy provider, and that same month, my light was cut off again. I called amigo and they said I had an outstanding balance of $590. I told them I was very confused because I had canceled my account the previous month, they said that to cancel my account I had to mail a letter to terminate the contract etc. I asked them why did they not tell me that last month, and why was I getting billed if I had already paid a different energy provider. They kept transferring me back and forth to different departments etc. I was on the phone with them for hours until I got tired of being put on hold and having to call back again and I gave up, this went on for several days... I have had light connectivity issues ever since then because according to my current energy provider, the previous company (amigo) locked my meter since I chose not to pay the $590. It is a complete scam. Why would I have to pay two different energy providers at the same time, all thanks to Amigo Energy's customer service staff for basically lying to me. Telling me that I was good to go. I am charged an extra $100 every month from my apartments because apparently due to amigo locking my meter, the light switches to the apartment owner's name in order for my current energy provider to give me light. It has been a very bad experience. I had to end up moving out this month because I cannot afford all these extra fees and it is very stressful to have to deal with my light being cut off every single month due to my meter being locked by amigo.

My monthly usage was normal and reasonable. Then, suddenly, my bill spiked to $250 a month. The funny thing is, my unit is empty!! I called them and explained, but they said this is the meter reading and they can't do anything about it. I canceled my service and enrolled with another vendor, and the new vendor reflects normal usage of $35+ a month. So, can someone explain this to me?

There's no option to give ZERO stars. Otherwise, I'd give this company a ZERO stars! Anyway, stay away from Amigo Energy. These people deceived my wife into giving her an estimated rate by asking for our address. This company took it upon themselves to switch my Green Mountain service over to their Amigo Energy, which I NEVER authorized! Stay away from Amigo Energy. The company and ALL their personnel are crooks!

We have been a loyal customer of amigo energy for over 12yrs and always renew our plans either 24 months or 36 months. Our plans was 11.6 per kw ..im due for renewal on 11apr and the best they offer was 16.9 per kw we were shocked as how amigo offer their loyal customer ..after our conversation regarding the offer all amigo said was we sorry that's the best we can do.. well I told them I'm sorry the best I can do is transfer to another provider since there is no loyal from amigo part they don't care it's all about the money.

As a first-time user, I had a highly positive impression of this company. The customer service staff, including Munish, Andre, and another team member who unfortunately escaped my memory, was exceptional. Although the first representative who assisted me quoted a timeframe exceeding 24 hours for connection, my service was up and running the next morning after signing up on Tuesday morning at 10 am. Today, on March 6th, 2024, when I called to address some queries relating to my service plan, I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the highly beneficial free night and solar buyback offer they had for me. Munish provided me with valuable assistance and set me up with my solar buyback plan in no time- apologies if I have spelled his name wrong, but he was truly fantastic! Thank you to the Amigo team let see how the rest of the year goes with your service.

Enrollment services are unprofessional and disrespectful.I already had service and they tried to trick me into enrolling as a new cx. Scammers, Hang up on you if they feel like it. Perk point thief’s .I have been a loyal customer for 7 years. We first chose amigo because of the energy perk points it was awesome got some new light switch covers and a google smoke detector. We were told that if we saved our points then we could get gift cards but today when I called they said they no longer offer perk point which I was never notified about. Okay then how many points have I collected before your company stopped ? Sorry sir I can’t tell you that cause we don’t have that information. So I now I have no points, no credits, no we are sorry, nothing. So I feel like amigo just stole from me. They told me to save my points then when I go to cash in they say oh sir we don’t do that anymore and can’t help you at all. So I will now be looking for a new provider that honers their loyal customers instead of lying and stealing from them. And I suggest anyone that reads this just go to txu or any other company really. Good luck on your search for a great provider cause this ain’t one.

How we rate providers

Plans and Rates: 

We review all available plans from every licensed energy provider. Then we rank the lowest available rate from each provider. Providers then receive a rating based on what percentile their lowest plan ranks.

For example, Provider A has the 3rd lowest-priced plan, while Provider B has the 45th lowest-priced plan out of 46 providers who submitted plans to PUC. Provider A will have a rating of 5, while Provider B will have a rating of 1.

Customer Service:

We scrape online reviews from Google, Yelp, BBB, and Trust Pilot to determine what customers are saying about the provider. The rating reflects the aggregate of all online reviews.

Renewable Options:

The rating system is based on the availability of renewable energy options. A 5-star rating is awarded to entities that offer a fully renewable option, signifying 100% renewable energy usage. A 4-star rating is given to those that provide a mix of energy sources, with more than 50% coming from renewable sources. Entities with renewable energy options exceeding the state average of 31.1% receive a 3-star rating, while those offering less than 31.1% renewable options are rated with 2 stars. Lastly, a 1-star rating is assigned to those with no renewable energy options, indicating a lack of commitment to sustainable energy practices.

PUC Rating:

The Public Utility Commission publishes a rating for each provider based on the number of formal complaints filed against the provider in comparison to how many customers they have.

For example, a provider with 10 formal complaints out of 10,000 customers would have a 1-star rating whereas a provider with 10 complaints and 1,000,000 customers would have a 5-star rating.
